San Jose:

COSTA RICA

Welcome to our newly created Costa Rica programs! Along with Mexico, we have launched into Costa Rica just this year, 2003, based on the many requests from you, our potential candidates. We are using the same model and ideas that make our program such an ongoing success in Espana. Namely:
  1. We are economical.
  2. We know our candidates as we remain customized and relatively small. Some similar companies send 900 to 2000 candidates abroad each year. Our goal this year is about 300.
  3. We work with mature and flexible and interesting candidates creating valuable and pertinent programs for them, based on solid in-country research and staff.
In Costa Rica, we offer 4 new Programs for you to participate in:
  • Intern in San Jose, Costa Rica
  • Volunteer in San Jose / Saripiqui, Costa Rica
  • Semester Abroad for Beginning Spanish Speakers (with Intl. Department students)
  • Semester Abroad for Advanced Spanish Speakers (with Costa Rican, or "Tico" students)
**There are some similarities in all programs and some differences - Please click on the program you are interested in for more detailed information, including e-brochures and application forms**

Costa Rica is the most developed of the Latin American countries and also the most expensive. You can pay for things in Costa Rica Colones or US dollars almost everywhere you go. It offers both industrious capitalism and amazing ecological treasures; an awful transportation infra-structure and restaurants and malls to suit every whim; luxury hotels and spas and taxi drivers that WILL overcharge you if they think they can get away with it, in short, what you already know if you are from the US or other "developed" country and what you have read about third world countries.

As one of the number one tourist destinations for Americans, there is plenty written about Costa Rica in both books and online, so you can do your research. Suffice to say it is a beautiful country with a people who are open to cultural interchange and not completely spoiled by the tourism they rely on. In the cities and along the beaches, people are highly educated and offer much to the interested and curious traveler. Crime, although it has been escalating lately, is still low. (In fact, when our team was there recently, some passports and credit cards were stolen. The Police came immediately when called and were ashamed and angered by the theft, working rapidly to try and find the culprits and then to produce the required Report needed to enable us to get new passports)

The interior of the country hasn't yet received the benefits from the tourist dollars spent along the coasts - the roads are horrible, so is traffic, and signage is non-existent. People are kind but poor and there is definitely a feeling of "you have" and "we don't" - this is an accurate sentiment and we suggest you resign yourself to the fact that for some things you will pay more - taxi rides!! -- simply because you are not a Tico. Even then, things in the interior of the country like meals and lodging can still be relatively cheap.

Have a look at our various program offerings, the FAQ pages, the online applications and brochures - we have tried to make sure there is a fit for everyone in this amazing country. From purely academic (for both undergrad and grad) to the work experience perspective to the volunteer perspective, we have created programs to suit most needs.
