Opportunities in Education: Teaching English, Working with Kids, Special Ed with Kids
This Internship Program is run in conjunction with the larger Adelante in Sevilla program. The program begins with your arrival in Sevilla where you will live and take your first two weeks of intensive Spanish language classes. Then, the weekend after your Spanish classes end, you will take the train to Jerez de la Frontera, about an hour journey, and continue the rest of your program living and interning in Jerez.
The internship program in Jerez is exclusively concerned with working in the Education sector. Opportunities include: Teaching English, Special Education and Administration. All internships are set within the extensive campus of a partially public, partially private school that celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2008. The school is for children and young people aged 4-18 years. Training is hands on and geared towards your internship goals.
For the Special Education internship, plan on working with kids that have varying levels of autism, ADD disorder and Downs Syndrome. A background in psychology or past experience with kids is helpful.
As with all internships, the longer you can participate the better
Programs run from 2 months to 6 months
Housing for the first two weeks in Seville is with either other Adelante candidates or a local Spanish person - you choose. In Jerez, housing is independent, usually your own room in a shared apartment with a teacher or young adult, or choose to live in a homestay with a local family (meals and laundry included, inquire for price difference). If you choose to live in a shared apartment then you do your own shopping and cooking as we feel this helps you truly integrate into the way of life and living, not just visiting, abroad. Choosing the homestay option will give you a real feel of what it is like to be a part of family life in Spain.
There is simply an unending list of things to do in and around this city... think horses, sherry, Flamenco, amazing beaches, golf and more. Jerez de la Frontera is situated midway between the ocean and the mountains, in the province of Cadiz, in the southern Andalucia region of Spain.
Jerez is the home of, and the only place where one can produce, the wine called sherry. Along with the many bodegas, surprisingly located in the center of town, there is a nice castle and cathedral and Jerez is the home to the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art. The prestigious Andalusian Center of Flamenco is also located here - it is said that flamenco originated in Jerez, and its influence is everywhere.
While clean and open beaches are less than 10 miles away, Jerez does not feel like a beach town. With a population of around 200,000 it is big enough to offer museums and other cultural venues, but small enough to navigate easily. There is an old quarter dating from the 10th century that is a must see and the Easter celebrations and annual horse fair in May are important celebrations that draw literally hundreds of thousands of visitors.
