Architecture & Design Internships Abroad

Gain Real-World Architecture & Design Experience in Some of the World’s Most Inspiring Cities

Passionate About Architecture or Design? We Got You

Architecture and design are fields that are best understood by doing. Working inside a professional firm in another country exposes you to different design philosophies, construction practices, and client environments that broaden your perspective in ways a classroom simply cannot replicate.

The architecture field has stricter requirements than most internship sectors, and that is actually a good thing. A working knowledge of CAD software is expected, and an intermediate level of Spanish is required for most placements. Students interested in interior design internships abroad are also welcome to apply through this sector, as the placements overlap significantly.

Architecture and interior design placements with Adelante Abroad are available in Spain, Uruguay, Ecuador, and Chile, with programs running throughout the year.

Why Choose an Architecture or Design Internship Abroad?

An international architecture or design internship gives you the kind of professional exposure that builds your portfolio and your perspective at the same time. Here is why architecture and design students choose to intern abroad with Adelante:

Build your portfolio with international work

Projects completed abroad add a distinct dimension to your portfolio that sets you apart when applying for jobs or graduate programs.

Experience different design traditions

Architecture and design vary significantly across countries and regions. Working in Spain or Latin America exposes you to design approaches, building styles, and client expectations you will not encounter at home.

Develop your Spanish in a professional context

Working in a Spanish-speaking firm builds the technical vocabulary and communication skills that are increasingly valuable in a global design industry.

What Will You Do as an Architecture & Design Intern Abroad?

Architecture and design is a broad field, and our placements reflect that. Here is a look at the types of work our architecture and design interns have taken on across their placements:

Work on Commercial and Residential Projects

Depending on your placement, you will contribute to commercial architecture projects such as clubhouses, hotels, and office spaces, or work with residential clients on private design projects. Some firms also take on corporate clients, designing office and meeting spaces for larger organizations.

Work on Building Renovation and Restoration Projects

Some architecture firms specialize in renovating existing buildings, including hotels preserving their historical status or star ratings, and building facades that cities require to be updated while maintaining their original character. This type of work gives you a strong grounding in the relationship between architecture, history, and urban planning.

Contribute to Active Projects in a Professional Firm

Interns work under a Senior Manager, Project Manager, or Senior Architect and Interior Designer on live projects. You will be expected to contribute meaningfully from early in your placement, using CAD software and other tools as part of the day-to-day workflow of a busy professional environment.

Interior Design Placements

Students interested in interior design are also placed through this sector. Placements may involve working on residential or commercial interior projects, supporting design concepts, preparing materials, and contributing to client-facing work under the guidance of an experienced design professional.
