LGBTQ Internships Abroad
Support LGBTQ Advocacy with an Internship Abroad
Ready to make an impact? Take on an LGBTQ internship abroad
LGBTQ advocacy looks different depending on where you are in the world. The organizations, the legal landscapes, and the communities they serve all vary in ways that are difficult to understand without being there. An LGBTQ internship abroad gives you direct exposure to that work in a context that shapes your understanding of equality, activism, and community support on a global scale.
Adelante works with well-established LGBTQ organizations across education, advocacy, community outreach, and event organizing. In Spain, placements have included organizations in Barcelona, Madrid, and Seville that advocate for LGBTQ rights and visibility, ranging from long-established groups with a strong political presence to newer ones focused on education and community building. In Chile, Adelante is well connected with organizations energized by the country’s anti-discrimination legislation, known as the Zamudio Law, and the renewed momentum it has brought to LGBTQ rights.
Programs run year-round in Spain and Chile. A low-intermediate or higher level of Spanish is required for most placements, as you will be working directly within Spanish-speaking community environments.
Why Choose an LGBTQ Internship Abroad?
An international LGBTQ internship gives you the opportunity to contribute to meaningful advocacy work while gaining the cross-cultural experience that shapes your understanding of equality and human rights on a global level. Here is why students choose this internship with Adelante:
Work with organizations that are doing important, active work
Placements are with established LGBTQ organizations that are engaged in real advocacy, education, and community support, not just administrative tasks.
Understand how LGBTQ rights and advocacy differ across countries
The legal, social, and cultural landscape for LGBTQ communities varies significantly from one country to another, and working abroad gives you a first-hand understanding of that.
Build your Spanish in a community and advocacy setting
Working in a Spanish-speaking LGBTQ organization develops communication skills and cultural awareness that are valuable in advocacy, social work, and community-facing careers.
Contribute to a cause that matters to you
For students passionate about equality and human rights, an LGBTQ internship abroad offers the opportunity to put that passion into practice in a meaningful and impactful way.
Earn academic credit
Most Adelante interns receive academic credit through their home university, with full documentation support from our team.
What Will You Do as an LGBTQ Intern Abroad?
LGBTQ advocacy is a broad field, and our placements reflect that. Here is a look at the types of work our LGBTQ interns have taken on across their placements:
Support Education & Awareness Programs
Many placements involve contributing to educational initiatives that raise awareness of LGBTQ issues in schools, universities, and community settings. Interns have supported workshops, presentations, and outreach programs that bring LGBTQ education to a wider audience.
Work in Community Outreach & Support
Some placements focus on direct community outreach, connecting LGBTQ individuals and families with resources, services, and support networks. This type of work gives you a close-up view of how organizations serve their communities and what it takes to make that support accessible and effective.
Contribute to Advocacy & Visibility Campaigns
Interns have contributed to campaigns designed to increase the visibility of LGBTQ issues and to advocate for equal rights at the local and national levels. In Spain and Chile, organizations are actively engaged in advocacy work that spans public communications, policy engagement, and community organizing.
Support Event Planning & Community Programming
Some placements involve helping to organize and run LGBTQ events, pride fairs, and community gatherings. In Seville, past interns have contributed to the planning and delivery of education and advocacy pride events that bring together the local LGBTQ community and its supporters.
