Theater Internships Abroad

Step Into the Spotlight with Theater Internships in Spain & Mexico

The Stage Is Set. Are You Ready to Take Your Place on It?

Spain has one of the richest theatrical traditions in the world. From the golden-age dramas of Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca to the explosive contemporary performance scenes in Madrid and Barcelona, the country lives and breathes the performing arts. For theater students and drama professionals looking for an internship abroad, there is no more inspiring place to be.

Adelante Abroad places theater and theatre interns with professional performing arts companies in Madrid, Barcelona, and Oaxaca, giving you hands-on experience in real productions, creative teams, and theatrical organizations. Whether you’re onstage, behind the scenes, in front of the lights, or designing them, Adelante has a placement that fits your specialty and ambitions.

Theater internships are available year-round, including summer, across three vibrant destinations. A basic to intermediate level of Spanish is helpful for most placements. Adelante provides language classes and cultural orientation at the start of your program to set you up for success.

Why Choose a Theater Internship Abroad?

The performing arts are a universal language, but every culture expresses them differently. Here’s why theater students and drama professionals choose to intern with Adelante Abroad:

Work inside a real theatrical organization

Our placements have been with professional theater companies, not student productions or workshops, working alongside career practitioners in a creative environment.

Experience performing arts in their cultural context

Spanish theater is steeped in history, passion, and a distinctly European aesthetic. Working within that tradition gives you a perspective on dramatic arts that does not exist in an American or Australian university program.

Build a genuinely international portfolio

Theater experience abroad signals creative flexibility, cultural curiosity, and willingness to push beyond your comfort zone. These are qualities every casting director, production company, and arts organization looks for.

Onstage or Behind the Scenes

Past interns have included performers, directors, stage managers, costume designers, lighting technicians, and props specialists, covering a wide range of theater skills and interests.

Immerse yourself in flamenco, physical theater, and Spanish dramatic tradition

Exposure to Spain’s distinctive performance culture will expand your artistic vocabulary in ways that influence your practice for years to come.

Earn academic credit

Most Adelante interns receive academic credit through their home university, with full documentation support from our team.

These placements are open to students and recent graduates in theater, drama, performing arts, stage management, costume design, lighting design, arts administration, and related fields. A genuine passion for the craft and enthusiasm for working in a Spanish-speaking creative environment are the most important qualifications you can bring.

What Will You Do as a Theater Intern Abroad?

Adelante’s theatre placements cover both the artistic and technical sides of professional theater production. Here’s a glimpse of what awaits you:

Artistic Fellow — Rehearsals, Casting & Artistic Management

As an Artistic Fellow, you’ll be embedded in the creative heart of a theater company, assisting with rehearsals, supporting casting, and contributing to artistic management throughout the season. This immersive, collaborative role is for candidates who want to understand how professional theatrical organizations run from the inside. You’ll be in the room where decisions are made, working alongside directors, producers, and creative leads.

Assistant Director

Assistant Director positions may be available for candidates with directing experience or strong production backgrounds. You’ll work alongside the director of main stage productions, supporting the creative vision across rehearsals and pre-production. This demanding, high-reward role gives you real credits and a front-row seat to professional Spanish theater-making in action.

Stage Management & Production Support

Stage management and production support interns work across the operational backbone of live theater, coordinating rehearsal schedules, managing props and set elements, supporting technical rehearsals, and ensuring productions run smoothly from first read-through to opening night. This is one of the most versatile and valuable theater internship tracks, building skills that transfer across the performing arts industry.

Scenery, Props & Costume Design

Adelante’s technical and design placements are perfect for students in costume design, scenic design, or props management. You’ll work with the production design team, assisting with the creation, sourcing, and management of visual elements that bring productions to life. Working in a Spanish aesthetic and cultural context adds a creative dimension to your design work that you can’t replicate in a home institution studio.
