Our program in Marbella & San Pedro area in the Costa del Sol on the southern coast of Spain is growing!
This area of the Costa del Sol is known as the Golden Mile - where beaches meet large, luxurious Urbanizations, the streets are wider and everything is a bit newer than in other parts of Spain. Money flows here at a more international level with inhabitants from literally all over the world living here either full time or part of each year. But there still is the Casco Viejo area and the Spanish traditions - such as siesta time during the middle of the day - that make this appealing to those looking for "typical Spanish" too.
Like our other programs in Madrid, Barcelona Sevilla and Jerez de la Frontera, you will greatly upgrade your resume, learn another language and live, deeply, another culture while a participant in this program.

Here are the highlights of our International Internship program in Marbella & San Pedro area, Spain, and why it is better and different:
- Flexible programs with rolling start dates, the first Monday of each month, all year round, with program lengths ranging from 1 to 6 months
- Program can be done for academic credit
- 2 weeks of intensive Spanish language classes are included in the fee
- Lodging is included. Your own room, always. Live like a Spaniard in a shared apartment with other Adelante candidates or elect to live with Spanish roommates or with a Spanish family (inquire for price difference for homestay option as this includes meals and laundry).
- You will be met at the airport or train station when you arrive into the area, and taken directly to your housing
- Come with a friend and live together during your adventure in Marbella.
- Internships are for 4 hours each day in either a local, Spanish-owned company or a larger, international organization or agency with offices in the Costa del Sol. You will gain real, international work experience to add to your resume.
Some events and activities are included during your intensive Spanish coursework. Some examples of these activities include a city and area tour, a beach or monument visit, a tapas tour, and a Spanish cooking or dance class. We also organize events each month, through the language schools we work with, which you are welcome to participate in -- some have a small fee, others are free. This program is meant to be 50% work experience and 50% cultural / language acquisition and immersion. To that effect, we help cultivate the cultural side of the program for you by making you aware of these events.
- The Andalucia region in general and the Golden Mile specifically will positively form a lasting and major impression on each participant - hard to define but anyone who spends any amount of time here acknowledges this
- On site, permanent local Adelante Director and English Speaking Adelante Spain Coordinator available to you for support, assistance and in many other ways should you need it for the duration of your program
This area is under constant construction and growth is just part of the horizon here. Plan on taking the bus and walking a lot: the distances are not far, but they are along a straight line (Golden Mile, remember?) with the beach and some housing on one side and the mountains and more housing on the other, and often crisscrossed by a busy thoroughfare / 2 lane highway. Our work assignments are located centrally (still, don't bring high heeled or uncomfortable shoes for work!) in the beautiful resort towns of Marbella and San Pedro!! The beaches, ATM, grocery stores, great cafes and nicer restaurants, cinema, theatres, shops and nightlife - everything you expect to find in a thriving jet set beach town is easily accessible. There are frequent bus stops/stations, and most all travel is done using public transport: either taking the bus or heading into Malaga and catching a train for longer trips.
IT IS OUR GOAL TO HELP YOU EXPERIENCE ANOTHER CULTURE THROUGH OUR INTERNATIONAL INTERNSHIP AND IMMERSION PROGRAMS. TO DATE WE HAVE PLACED 100% OF CANDIDATES IN INTERNSHIPS ABROAD. WE HAVE GOOD SUCCESS MATCHING CANDIDATES WITH THEIR DESIRED SECTORS, BASED ON THEIR SKILLS AND AVAILABILITY. CANDIDATES THAT ARE BEGINNING SPEAKERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE BY APPLYING FOR TEACHING ENGLISH ASSIGNMENTS.
NOTE: If you want to intern in a Sector you don't see here, then with a minimum of 60 days advance notice we can make an effort to find a placement in your desired field.
MEDICAL
There are several options now in Marbella / San Pedro in the Medical sector. Candidates will have the opportunity to shadow a nurse or a doctor, visiting patients in a Clinica or a private practice office setting. Initially, the candidate will do minor tasks associated with patients and patient care, and will be given more responsibility once his/her capacity is determined. For some, this will be mostly observation. For others, this can be realization of medical duties. Unlike business internships, candidates in these programs work with the human condition, often sick or chronically ill cases, therefore, logically, much depends on the candidate, their level of Spanish, past experience, program length, etc. Sectors include chronic illness, pediatrics, general practitioner, dermatology and even aesthetic surgery centers. It is an excellent opportunity for exposure to the medical sector in a foreign, in this case, European, setting.
PHARMACY
Pharmacy internships are quite different than in the US! Here, candidates will attend to the public, dispense medicine and assist Doctors on staff. Pharmacy candidates will be exposed to many levels of the this industry, not simply the handing out of prescriptions. These placements require studies in the medical, nursing or pharmaceutical fields. This is an amazing opportunity to experience first-hand how the Pharmacy profession operates in a foreign country, and to appreciate how the policies and procedures differ in Europe as compared to the United States.
MARKETING / PUBLIC RELATIONS
This internship can take place in distinct firms and organizations. Most companies in this area are smaller to mid-sized as this area is not a capital city like Madrid or Barcelona. Candidate may focusing on maintaining already created projects / clients or attending to specific client and collaboration companies needs. Projects may include creating and maintain new marketing / ad / PR strategies to garner new clients / results. The candidates will do their internships in private companies, corporations or in non-profit agencies or organizations.
TOURISM
This area is arguably the best place in the world for this sector - Marbella has been a destination for both the jet set and backpackers and students for decades and the Hotel industry here is extremely well developed. We place in multiple Hotels in this area. There is a dedicated Intern Supervisor based at the Hotel for daily interactions as needed. Shifts are usually for 5-7 hours a day, 5 days a week, with a lunch break. All meals plus laundry and cleaning services can be included. Candidates live in a double-room with other international (eg. German, Swedish, Italian) or American interns, for the duration of their program.
Your duties at the hotel will vary depending on your prior experience and Spanish skills, but may include any or all of the following:
- guest registration, check-in and check-out, making reservation/room changes
- directing guests to their rooms and showing them the hotel facilities
- selling towels, phone cards, meal tickets, locker tokens, handing out sports equipment/games etc
- answering questions about the hotel and Marbella in general
- counting the cash drawer and filing registration and other forms
- typing and printing menus and other documents
- answering the phones if your Spanish skills are up to it!
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS
This internship can take place in many sectors, including Real Estate, Import / Export, Fashion, Medical, Travel and more. The principal job duties in these internships will be to create and execute new business strategies, cultural programs, educational / advocacy programs, new products or services; and to assist in bettering the existing processes. Spain maintains business relations with different European, American, African and Asian countries, which provides an appropriate backdrop to do a variety of things during an internship in this field.
LANGUAGES
Candidates interested in Translation and / or Education can participate in internships collaborating in language classes for Spanish adults or for children, creating instructive lessons / new ideas for learning, designing materials, developing new activities that will be used during classes, both theoretical and practical. Under this heading we also offer Translation internships, whereby candidates can assist Translation Agencies or in Translation projects within many sectors
NEW RESTAURANT WORK
This is the old stand by - wait service or bartending - but of course, you will be doing so in one of the most sought after destinations in the world: South of Spain! Restaurants are varied from international / places catering to tourists, to alternative to traditional Spanish offerings. We like this internship as it has a variety of work shift options (some like to work at night) and it caters to both "foodie" candidates and those who perhaps are not studying Hospitality or Catering, but rather simply want an interesting something to do while they live and learn in Marbella. And, of course, there are the tips….
SOCIAL WORK AND PSYCHOLOGY
In this sector we place largely within the NGO's - these are the larger non-profits that serve a number of groups of the Spanish and International population. Different areas are: at-risk youth, battered women; immigrant rights; refugee rights; gay, lesbian and bi - trans-sexual issues, drug dependence; homeless, and many, many more. These are amazingly diverse and international and quite rewarding placements that fall under both Social Work and Psychology sectors.
TRAVEL AGENCY
Candidates will work in a fast paced, busy environment paying particular attention to Client Services. Plan on doing a bit of everything, from airport pick-ups, to guiding tours, to billing, to translating to booking flights. All training provided. An excellent option for outgoing candidates who want o be hands on and very busy during their time in Spain
