“I chose Uruguay for its safety and security, but quickly fell in love with the ‘tranqui’ way of life, the Rioplatense dialect and the hospitality between the people. My expectations were to put my head down for four months and work at the office doing my internship in translation, then return home. That couldn’t be further from the truth. I met some amazing people from all over the world, who were fascinated about me and my country (the UK) and eager to exchange cultures. It was my first time visiting a country whose people didn’t know much about the UK, and I learned so much about how it is viewed on the other side of the world. Simultaneously I learnt so much about Uruguayan culture from almost constant interaction with natives both in the office at my internship and also at the home where I was staying. I found that Uruguayans are lovely people and will always do the most to ensure you are doing okay- in a way that is so different from the customary and empty English “how are you doing?” to which you will always answer “fine”. My experience with Adelante was amazing. Communication was always swift, I always found myself informed about the logistics of my placement and it was a big reassurance to have the programme coordinator in the country- especially as a young solo female traveller. I would heavily recommend Uruguay to anyone, but especially to any traveller who is concerned about safety. My experience here has been wonderful and I definitely see myself coming back.”

This was by far the best trip that I have ever been on!! With the help of all the staff at SRUC Elmwood, it was very easy and quick to get integrated into the program and comfortable in a new country. They also taught us so much about the world of golf. From the history of golf, coaching, to talking with General Managers and Head Greenskeepers of facilities to get a behind-the-scenes look at the workings of a golf course. There was so much information and experiences that were done over the month in Scotland that created countless memories that I will remember forever.
This has truly been a once-in-a-lifetime experience! The staff is top notch they are more like friends than teachers/chaperones. From top-notch coaching to world-renowned golf courses, this is definitely every golfers dream. The courses are also very engaging and rely heavily on real-world experience being able to go to hickory golf course, visit the golf museum and coach a group of children in golf. I recommend this program to anyone interested.

This experience has truly been a life-changing moment for me. I was able to work alongside and learn from so many incredible healthcare professionals who have inspired me in many different ways. The staff continually stressed the importance of education and implementing hands-on practice in order to build self-confidence within the healthcare field. Not only was I able to utilize and practice many skills that I have learned in my own nursing practice in the States, but I was also able to gain a new perspective within the healthcare system in Spain. It has been so interesting to see the many similarities and differences between healthcare practice in Spain versus nursing practice in the States.
Thank you for all your guidance and support during my time abroad! I am so grateful to Adelante for giving me the opportunity to experience something that was very much out of my comfort zone, but in turn, gave me a whole new outlook on the world and allowed me to build lifelong friendships that I will forever cherish.

I truly loved my experience in the program. I’m still kind of astonished at the amount of software development knowledge I gained in just over 3 months. Learning how to speak technical jargon in Spanish also made me confident that I can work in the software industry in any Spanish-speaking country in the future. Interning in Spain has always been a dream of mine ever since I learned Spanish and Adelante was able to make it a reality. They helped out with all the steps when it came to location, housing and work placement. I was able to not only gain relevant work experience in my field, but also connect and make friends with people from all parts of the world, put my Spanish skills to the test and grow as a person. I highly recommend everyone to take the chance and go out of their comfort zone by studying or interning abroad.
I had an amazing time here. I learned a lot and had so much fun traveling around here. I had never ridden english before so this was all new. They were very patient with us. I came in with some equine A&P knowledge but I definitely was able to broaden that knowledge. Equine fitness was all new to me. I learned a lot about making a fitness plan to get a horse ready for different types of competitions.
I spent 3 months in Uruguay, interning with a law firm in Punta del Este. The firm I interned with was the first firm to receive recognition for its continuous improvement and quality management by the National Institute of Quality (INACAL). It was an honor to collaborate with a firm with such recognition. My internship placement was flexible, and I received university credit for my internship. My firm was happy to accommodate my hours and fill out all forms I needed for the university.

I had such an amazing time here and I am so sad that it is time to leave! The relationships I made at my veterinary placement as well as with the other students through Adelante have all been wonderful! I learned so much and all of the staff were so amazing! Coming to Madrid for 3 months was the best decision I ever made. I did an internship that involved teaching Spanish children English. I absolutely loved my experience living in Sevilla through the Adelante Abroad program. I loved the structure of the Adelante program because it enabled me to really immerse myself in the city like a local rather than only learning about the surface-level/touristy aspects of Sevilla. The only Americans that I interacted with in my 3 months were my roommates and of the friends I made were from all around the world. I don’t know of another program where I would have had the opportunity to completely make my own experience. The simplicity of the program (in which they find you housing and internship placement and then allow you to be independent) is also what makes this one of the most affordable abroad experiences. My university has a 5-week program in Sevilla that was 3 times the cost of Adelante and not half as immersive. This was the perfect program and if I could go back in time I would have done the exact same program over again.
This experience is a must, especially for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure in South America! Uruguay is a friendly, liberal (the most equitable country in South America!), accepting, and culturally rich country with gorgeous beaches all along its coast. This experience is a must, especially for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure in South America! Uruguay is a friendly, liberal (the most equitable country in South America!), accepting, and culturally rich country with gorgeous beaches all along its coast. There were many amazing sunsets I witnessed and the beach was nice and relaxing to swim after a long day. The people were my favorite part of Uruguay. They are eager to learn about you as much as you want to learn about them. I highly recommend my educational internship experience in Uruguay. This is a great opportunity for anyone who is studying education and would like to up their skills in Spanish. My Spanish Instructor was excellent and second to none – very personable and helped me pinpoint my strengths as well as weaknesses to work on in my Spanish progress.

Adelante Abroad helped me find an internship that aligned with my values and introduced me to an entirely new place I had never been to before. Oaxaca, Mexico is a special place that any creative should go to at least once in their life. This is the center of where your experience can be extremely impacted because of Oaxaca’s huge artisan community. When it came to my experience and my internship, they helped contribute to how much I learned and grew as a designer and a person. With my internship, I was able to learn and achieve the goals I set for myself. In three months, I have learned the basics of web design, branding, and design within my desired field. What an exceptional experience. This internship not only helped me find different ways to communicate with others but also how to work with different types of people and to work outside of my primary comfort zone. This study abroad program is extremely organized and willing to work with you. The internship was great, I was able to work with a professor who was really conducive to my interests and passions. All my coworkers were also lovely and helped me improve my Spanish skills throughout my time there. I do feel that it is important to mention though that you should take the Spanish language skill required by Adelante seriously. Some internships do require a higher level of speaking and if you are dishonest with Adelante about your ability there isn’t much they can do to help if your boss becomes dissatisfied. Adelante provided me with the opportunity to live and work in Madrid which was most definitely one of the best experiences of my life. I feel as if the internship placement could have been better, but being the most affordable program I found, I’m far from dissatisfied.

I did the medical internship in Viña del Mar, Chile. First of all, it is a beautiful city to live in, with lots to do and with Valparaiso just a 20 minute metro/bus ride away. The location of the house is perfect and in a safe place, just a few blocks from the beach and about a 30 second walk from a supermarket. I lived with other Adelante candidates and got along with all of them exceptionally well. The staff at the language school are welcoming, and my classes really helped me get accustomed to living in my new city. I learned about the unique spanish spoken in Chile, and my professor also took me out of the classroom to explore Viña as well as Valparaíso and learn about their history and culture. In order to meet new people, I recommend going to language exchanges in Viña or Valparaíso – these can be found through MeetUp online, and it’s a great way to meet natives and practice spanish! Living in a new city with no familiar faces and a language barrier can be daunting, so these really helped me at first! When I started my internship at a local physical therapy (kinesiology) office, it was challenging of course due to the new environment and the language. Within a few weeks, however, I was effectively communicating with patients, leading several patient sessions, and carrying out physiotherapy. My spanish improved dramatically and I also learned technical vocabulary that will help me in my future career. The employees were great teachers and always made sure I understood what was happening, the patient’s affliction, and what techniques they were using and why. The last month of my stay, there was political unrest in Chile but Adelante staff made sure we stayed safe, and maintained communication with us. I would not change anything about my experience in Chile, as it helped me grow as a person and greatly increased my skills and confidence in Spanish. The people in Chile are very welcoming and kind, even though Chilean spanish can be hard to understand at first! I’ve come to love Chile so much and I will definitely be coming back! I could’t recommend this Adelante program more.

Adelante staff prior to departure were quite helpful and answered all my questions as best as possible. The two week course at Eureka was great and very laid-back; the teachers are fun and helpful and all of them actually want to teach, so it is a great way to review your Spanish before working. As a pharmacy student, I was given a position at one of the many farmacias in Spain and helped patients find the best medication for their illness, rang out patients, processed orders, and completed paperwork for the pharmacy. I would suggest this program for those who are at least at a low intermediate level of Spanish because I was spoken to only in Spanish at my position and I know many positions at Adelante that are very similar. While there were no issues to report at my job, I would have felt comfortable reaching out to any of the Adelante staff if I did have any problems because they made it clear that they were there to help me. Adelante does a great job with housing because of its location in the center of Madrid and because they find a solution to problems or maintenance issues relatively quickly, especially if you physically speak to Angel who is the director of the Eureka language school.
I loved going to the (language) school and meeting the people, definitely going to miss going there every day. I am definitely enjoying my time out here! I was an English-teaching intern in Viña Del Mar, Chile for a month. The city was an amazing and beautiful place to be and I felt quite safe. The program had a lack of guidelines on what we were supposed to be teaching, and although that was a challenge, it provided us with the opportunity to create an entirely new lesson plan that catered to the needs of the students. We taught four amazing adults who were eager to learn from us and it felt great! I’d encourage future interns to take as many weekend outings as they can in Chile. The city has so many amazing activities and sights that will keep you busy in between your working hours. The only downside of the program was that I had to find my own transportation back to the airport at the end of the program which was expensive and difficult to navigate. But my experience in teaching in Chile outweighed any cons that arose!

The main reason why my experience was unique is due to the type of company I worked for and activities that I was able to perform. When I discovered that my university program required me to work for a full school year in a foreign country I was worried that I would have had to take part in one of those classic, mundane and monotonous 9-5 jobs which involved performing tasks while sat at a desk in front of a computer screen. This is basically the equivalent of suicide to someone like me who loves living his life outdoors performing sporting activities. Thanks to Adelante’s program, however, I was able to find a football club in Madrid that allowed me to actively participate in their training sessions, as well as help out coaches in as many ways as possible during the sessions. My university accepted the program and I was able to spend these 7 months here about as well as I could have ever hoped for.

I originally chose this program with Adelante because it was by far the cheapest one available. The price is reasonable and includes meals and housing– both of which turned out great. I loved my host and the meals she made for me. I felt at home there. Also, Sevilla, in general, is a beautiful city that is very safe, colorful, and walkable. The university (UPO) is not within walking distance but has its own metro stop so getting to class is easy and convenient. The courses required some work but were not overly stressful. Adelante was helpful as well with connecting me with a local study abroad program and continuing to check up on me through email throughout my stay. I will say that the program works best for students that are independent, as Adelante representatives will tell you. Many other programs are so expensive because they have some trips bundled in the cost– this is not the case with Adelante. So, if you are interested in planning your own trips and activities around Spain/Europe with more flexibility, this program may be a good fit. You also may want to consider how willing you are to meet new people and try solo travel for the times when the schedules of other students who have more boxed-in programs don’t align with your travel plans. These aspects worked for me and I got to travel a lot with the money I saved by choosing this program– also, there are many student/erasmus travel programs for the weekend like We Love Spain which I also would recommend. Sevilla is a beautiful city and I had an awesome time there. I gained a lot of confidence in myself during my stay there and would highly recommend it!

My two months in Ecuador was an incredible experience! I lived in Quito with an Ecuadorian family and completed 2 weeks of Spanish Language classes before beginning a 6-week placement at a veterinary clinic. Not only did I gain incredible skills and knowledge from my work placement that I can apply towards veterinary school in Canada, but I was also able to travel around Ecuador and get to know its culture and people. My main goal out of this experience was to learn to speak another language. I came to Ecuador with some basic Spanish but being immersed in it every day, both at home with my host family and at work, allowed me to accomplish this goal. Everything in Spain is going well. The internship has been really great thus far. I mainly help to coordinate volunteers for projects that (my internship’s NGO section) has going on. But I have also helped with revisions in Spanish, French and English, and have translated a few articles into English. The internship was a fantastic fit, which really showed how much Adelante listened to what I wanted from the experience, as well as they attention they payed to what skills I already had. I learned a lot, met many new people, and got to know the amazing city. I even decided to move back to Oaxaca for the rest of the year to work at the art studio where I was previously interning!
Volunteering in Oaxaca was one of the best experiences of my life. My program helped me interact with indigenous Master artisans who taught me many valuable lessons about Oaxaca’s culture and about their indigenous heritage. Oaxaca itself is a very rich source of cultural knowledge and colorful experiences. Everyone was very warm and helpful at my volunteer organization and they guided me throughout my volunteering experience. Adelante also did a great job at finding very centralized housing options, and providing guidance and suggestions for my time in Oaxaca, like assisting to Guelaguetza, a beautiful tradition in which all the regions of Oaxaca showcase their traditional attires and dances. In summary, I can’t wait to go back to Oaxaca again.

Part of what drew me to Adelante is all the planning they do for you before you even set foot in the country. It was such a relief to not have to try to find housing or get an interview for the job I worked for. If you want to go abroad, experience a new culture and get a seriously good experience, Adelante is for you.

I was living right in the center of the city, which was incredible, there was so much to do nearby. I worked for a financial consulting company that analyzed the US stock market. I didn’t know anything about the market before I came, but working in the office for 6 months definitely helped me pick up a few things, although I would have liked to learn more. All in all, I highly recommend Adelante. I personally feel that living abroad is an experience that everyone should have, and Adelante is a pretty awesome way to do just that.
Uruguay is a place like no other. I may have come here at the wrong time of year (it’s winter), but if I hadn’t I wouldn’t have been able to work at a place that really enjoy. I’m a college student, and most internships that are out there for people at this level just have you shredding papers and getting coffee. At [my internship] I got the polar opposite. They had me observing classes, working with teachers, running workshops, and substitute teaching. I actually have teaching experience now, which is amazing and surprising from an unpaid internship. It helped that I’m a native English speaker, but they actually had me working and were using my abilities and asking for how I felt about the classes and what my feedback was about them. I actually felt like a valued member of the school. How often can you say that you feel valued at an internship?
I would participate in another Adelante program if given the chance. The program was extremely affordable in comparison to the others available and yet in comparing my experience with friends who choose other programs, Adelante never felt like a cookie-cutter experience. It is true that it didn’t have as many excursions or trips, but I preferred the independence to explore the culture on my own. I was able to make my own experience and that was more rewarding then going on a packaged tour.
