Speech Pathology & Hearing Science Internships Abroad
Gain Clinical & Research Experience through Speech Pathology Internships
Advance Your Speech & Hearing Science Career Abroad
Speech-language pathology and audiology are fields built on communication. The best way to deepen your understanding is to step into a different linguistic and cultural environment. Working with patients and researchers in another country challenges your assumptions, sharpens your clinical instincts, and gives you a perspective on speech, hearing, and language you cannot get at home.
Adelante offers two rare and specialized pathways for SLP and hearing sciences students: a hands-on clinical audiology internship in Seville, Spain, and a competitive observation and research program with PhD faculty at a prestigious university in Edinburgh, Scotland. International experience in this field is uncommon, which is exactly what makes it so valuable.
We have a program built for every stage of your speech and hearing sciences journey. From logging observation hours and exploring audiology clinically, to joining active research alongside PhD faculty. The Seville placement requires a minimum 2-month commitment and low-intermediate Spanish. The Scotland program is conducted in English and runs for 5 weeks each summer.
Why Choose a Speech Pathology or Hearing Sciences Internship Abroad?
International experience is rare in SLP and audiology, which makes it powerful on your resume, graduate school application, or clinical portfolio. Here’s why students pursue this experience abroad:
Stand out for graduate school and clinical programs
International observation hours and research experience show the initiative and curiosity that top SLP and audiology programs seek.
Work with bilingual and multilingual populations
Spain’s diverse linguistic environment exposes you to speech and language phenomena, including bilingualism, accent, and language acquisition, that are central to the field.
Gain clinical exposure in a different healthcare system
Observing how audiology and speech therapy are practiced in Europe or the UK broadens your clinical thinking in ways that are hard to quantify but impossible to forget.
Contribute to real research
The Scotland program places you in active university research projects, giving you genuine research experience to discuss in interviews and applications.
Accelerate your Spanish
Working in a Spanish-language clinical setting is one of the fastest ways to develop bilingual skills valued by SLP employers across the US.
Earn academic credit
Most Adelante interns receive credit through their home university, with full documentation support from our team.
These programs are open to students in speech-language pathology, audiology, communication sciences and disorders, hearing sciences, or related fields.
What Will You Do as a Speech & Hearing Science Intern Abroad?
Adelante offers two distinct program pathways in this field, with a different focus, location, and type of experience. Here’s what to expect from each:
Clinical Audiology Internship — Seville, Spain
In Seville, you’ll shadow a Doctor and Audiologist in her private clinic, gaining hands-on exposure to the full range of clinical audiology practice. Day-to-day work includes observing and assisting with hearing evaluations for babies, children, and adults; tonal and speech audiometry; and functional tests, such as assessments of auditory behavior in infants and young children, alongside objective electrophysiological tests, such as otoacoustic emissions and brainstem evoked potentials.
This clinic is a Baha Official Center, serving patients who are not candidates for conventional hearing aids or cochlear implants due to middle-ear problems, perforations, suppuration, malformations, or unilateral hearing loss. The Baha system can be placed through a minor surgical procedure that fixes a titanium abutment to the temporal bone, or non-surgically using a band or soft pad that transmits acoustic vibrations to the ear. Exposure to this technology is a rare and distinctive element of the Seville placement.
A minimum 2-month commitment and low-intermediate Spanish or higher are required for this placement.
Speech & Hearing Sciences Observation & Research — Edinburgh, Scotland
Each summer, Adelante offers a highly competitive 5-week Observation & Research program at a prestigious university in Edinburgh. You’ll work directly alongside PhD faculty, audiologists, and language experts on active research projects, collecting new data and analyzing existing data across topics such as bilingualism, dialects, stuttering, and other speech and hearing phenomena.
The program is conducted entirely in English and is ideal for students interested in the research side of speech and hearing sciences, whether you are preparing for a graduate research degree or want to strengthen a clinical application with genuine research experience. Edinburgh is one of the world’s most beautiful and culturally rich cities, and living there for 5 weeks is an experience in itself.
This program fills early every year. If you’re a serious candidate, submit your application as soon as possible. Spots are limited and we usually place 2-4 students in this program each summer.
