How to Travel Without Leaving Home

Adelante Abroad has always had as it mission to get people out of their comfort zone and off the couch, and experiential learning around the world — but if there was ever a time to stay on the sofa, it is now. No way to get around it, we are all going to be spending a lot more time at home. And as alien as it sounds to say “travel is out of the question right now,” we’re still dreaming of and actively planning our next adventure abroad. Until then, virtual vacations and “seeing” far flung sites via our screens ….well this is still most definitely open to everyone with an imagination and an internet connection.

Interested in learning about arts, history and culture? With just a few clicks, you can explore countless galleries and museum exhibits around the world. And its all FREE! The Smithsonian National Museum of ​Natural History has an amazing collection of virtual tours of past and present exhibits. Most famous museums like The Louvre and The Vatican offer virtual tours. Want to see some street art? Check out Google Arts & Culture,​ where you can take digital tours of New York’s street art to ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru​.

You won’t be able to take those beautiful Instagram pictures, but you can still explore some of the world’s most celebrated heritage sites without leaving home. The UNESCO website has a list of over 1000 world heritage site to explore. From more well known sites such as England’s Stonehenge and the Great Wall of China to hidden gems like Sri Lanka’s Sigiriya Rock Fortress, lot of them have their own virtual tours that enable you to see detailed panoramic images while reading all about these fascinating places.

Nothing can cheer you up more than watching cute animals play around. Many zoos and aquariums provide webcams and virtual tours so you can watch many exotic animals without leaving your home. The San Diego Zoo has more than 3500 different animals including polar bears, elephants, and giraffes and you can live-stream many of them on their website. Want to know what goes on beyond the ocean surface? Just go to Monterey Bay aquarium website and you can watch sharks, sea otters, and penguins as well as a live view of the outside bay.

It won’t be quite the same as being out in nature, but you can still explore national parks virtually. Discover the coast line of Monterey Bay, the unique rock formations of Bryce Canyon, and the spectacular Northern lights. Hop on to Google Earth to discover many more national parks the world has to offer.
